Sheema: Good morning and welcome to The Rumpus Daily. I'm Sheema Sharti.
Neil: And I'm Neil Matthews. Every weekday we bring you the signals from the world's prediction markets. Today is Friday, October second.
Sheema: Two stories are driving money today. Traders have swung hard towards a Fed hold in October, with the no-change contract jumping forty-two points in a week after ten-year Treasury yields hit their highest level since 2002. And in Brazil, with Sunday's first-round vote two days away, traders have made Renan Santos the favourite to finish third, though the price has moved fast enough to warrant scepticism.
Neil: The Fed story carries the most money. About eight hundred thousand dollars changed hands on that contract in the last twenty-four hours.
Traders pile into a Fed hold as yields hit a 24-year high
Neil: On Polymarket, a prediction exchange where people bet on outcomes, the contract asking whether the Fed leaves its benchmark rate unchanged at the October meeting stands at seventy-five per cent. That is up forty-two points from thirty-three per cent just a week ago. Kalshi, a rival exchange, prices a hold at seventy-three per cent.
Sheema: What is driving the move?
Neil: The ten-year Treasury yield, what Washington pays to borrow for ten years and the rate that sets mortgages and corporate borrowing costs across the economy, hit five-point-three-four per cent on October first, a twenty-four-year high, then eased back. That gives the committee room to wait a meeting, on our reading.
Sheema: A yield at a twenty-four-year high could equally read as an inflation scare the Fed cannot ignore. The committee may feel it has to raise rates in October to show it is fighting inflation.
Neil: The yield pulled back the same day it peaked, and the long-Treasury fund TLT rose one per cent as it did, which is what you see when the bond market expects less tightening, not more. The hike is priced for December, not October: a twenty-five basis point rise, a quarter of a percentage point added to the target range, trades at sixty-eight per cent. Traders have moved the rise later, not abandoned it.
Sheema: The seventy-five per cent price still underrates the hold, on our read. What would change that? A September inflation report hot enough to revive the October hike contract, or committee members calling publicly for a move before the meeting on October twenty-ninth.
Renan Santos is the market's pick for third in Brazil
Neil: Brazil, with Sunday's vote two days away. Renan Santos is the market's pick to finish third. His Polymarket contract rose from forty-four per cent on September twenty-fifth to sixty-two per cent today, up eighteen points in a week.
Sheema: Why does third place matter here?
Neil: Flavio Bolsonaro's win contract trades near sixty per cent, so he is the favourite. Third is the highest a right-wing rival outside the Bolsonaro family can expect. Santos's main competition is Augusto Cury at twenty-seven per cent on Polymarket, with Ronaldo Caiado a distant twelve.
Sheema: Is sixty-two per cent a settled view, or a price that has run too fast?
Neil: The contract swung from forty per cent on September twenty-seventh to sixty-five per cent on October first, then slipped three points. A price that moves twenty-five points in four days and retreats leaves room for Cury to close the gap before Sunday's count.
Sheema: Our call: Santos finishes third, but less surely than sixty-two per cent implies. The call is wrong if the official count puts Cury or Caiado third instead.

Sheema: Neil, thanks very much.
Neil: Thanks, Sheema.
Sheema: Two calls to carry into the weekend: a Fed hold on October twenty-ninth, and Santos third in Brazil on Sunday. That's The Rumpus Daily for Friday, October second. We'll see you on Monday.
