Alito retirement odds jump ten points in a day
Traders lift the chance Alito announces his exit by year-end from 7% to 17% this week.
In one line: Alito will not announce a retirement before 31 December; the 17% traders now pay overstates a move that came in a single day.
Traders on Polymarket raised the chance that Samuel Alito announces his retirement by 31 December from 7% on 30 Sep to 17% on 7 Oct. All ten points of the week's rise came in the last 24 hours, by the venue's own figure, and the contract ends the week at its high.
The contract pays Yes if Alito announces by 11:59pm ET on 31 December that he will retire. The rule counts any timing, "immediate, at the end of the current Supreme Court term, or at any point in the future." The bet is on a statement, not a vacancy: word now of a departure in 2027 would pay. At 17%, with 86 days left, traders put the odds near one in six.
The price path carries a single fact, a ten-point jump in one day after a week spent between 6% and 7%. A jump that has not yet built on itself is the thinnest evidence a price can offer. It shows traders changed their minds, not why. The rule's breadth helps Yes, since Alito need only say he will go. Even so, a justice makes this choice once, and 12 weeks is a short window for it to land.
Alito does not announce his retirement by 31 December, and 17% overstates the chance. The best case for the price is its speed: ten points in a day is more than drift, and a report of Alito's plans from a major outlet before the year ends would make it right. The call is wrong if Alito announces a retirement of any timing by 11:59pm ET on 31 December. It matters beyond the contract because an announcement would open a seat on the Supreme Court for the president to fill.
