Talks Begin, but Traders Push the Blockade's End Past September

Polymarket gives the blockade little chance of ending this month, yet prices an exit by December as likely.

President Donald Trump said U.S. and Iranian officials met on Tuesday, shortly after he told the U.N. General Assembly he may 'annihilate' Iran if a deal to end the war is not reached soon, AP reported on 22 September. Newsday reported the same day that Trump offered few details about the talks. Also on 22 September, forexlive, citing Kyodo News, reported that Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States takes steps to ease pressure on Tehran. The offer went to Washington through intermediaries.

Polymarket prices an announced end to the blockade by 30 September at 8%. That is down 2 points on the day and down from 14% on 16 September. The week was not a straight slide. The price touched a low of 8% on 19 September, jumped to 20% on 22 September, the day the meeting was reported, then gave the whole rise back. The later contracts in the same event tell a different story. October 31 sits at 35% and December 31 at 65%.

Read together, the facts and the prices agree more than they clash. Traders are not betting that the blockade lasts; they put an end by December at better than even. What they doubt is the calendar. Iran's offer asks Washington to move first, and it arrived alongside a threat to annihilate Tehran. With 8 days to resolution, a deal would have to be struck and the end announced after one meeting that produced few public details. The spike to 20% priced a headline, and the fade priced the missing terms.

Where I part with the market is October. A first round of talks, an Iranian offer with a seven-day clock, and a president demanding a deal soon make an announcement before 31 October more likely than 35% implies. My call is that the US announces an end to the blockade by 31 October, a claim the October contract prices well under even. The call is wrong if 31 October passes with no such announcement.
